Coming events from DC 37 committees/departments

The Black History Committee is coordinating DC 37 participation in the 2002 African American Day Parade. The annual parade will take place on Sunday, September 22 in Harlem. The DC 37 contingent will assemble at 1 p.m. at 112th Street and Adam Clayton Powell Blvd. For more information please call committee co-chairs Sherwyn Britton at 212-815-1999 or Cynthia Chin-Marshall at 212-815-1391.

The Housing Committee will hold Affordable Mortgage seminars at DC 37 headquarters on Tuesday, Sept. 17 and Wednesday, Oct. 16 at 6:00 p.m. You must be registered to attend. Seminars are co-sponsored by the JP Morgan Chase Residential Lending program. For more information and to register, please call (212) 815-1814.

The Italian Heritage Committee will showcase an exhibit on Tuesday, October 1 at DC 37 headquarters at 6:00 p.m. The annual dinner dance will take place Oct. 19 at Russo's on the Bay. For more information and to purchase tickets, please call committee chair Michael DeMarco at 212-815-1023.

The Latino Heritage Committee will celebrate Latino Heritage Month with an opening ceremony Monday, Sept. 16 at 6:00 p.m. at DC 37 headquarters, 125 Barclay Street in lower Manhattan. The celebration will continue through Oct. 18, when DC 37 and Local 1549 will host the grand finale. For more information, please call committee Vice-Chair José Sierra at (212) 815-1010. Local 1070's Latino Heritage celebration will be on Friday, September 20 at 6:00 p.m. in Room 1. Local 371's celebration will be on Friday, September 27 at 6:00 p.m. in Room 1. Local 420's celebration will be on Friday, Oct. 4 at 6:00 p.m. in Room 1. Local 372's celebration will be on Friday, Oct. 11 at 6:00 p.m. in Room 1. Local 983's celebration will be on Thursday, Oct. 24 at 6:00 p.m. in Room 1.

The Health Committee will hold a meeting on Monday, September 23 at 6:00 p.m. to discuss plans for DC 37 participation in this year's Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk scheduled for October 20, 2002. For more information, please call (212) 815-1502.

The Pension Committee will host a Tax Deferred Savings Information Fair. Through payroll deduction, you may save on your taxes and save for the following covered areas: Retirement - 401(k) and 457; Transit - Premium Metrocard; Child Care and Elder Care and the College Savings Plan through TIAA-CREF. There will also be information on the Earned Income Tax Credit program for low-income wage earners. The fair will be on Thursday, Sept. 19, 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at DC 37 headquarters, Rooms 1-7. The District Council 37 Education Dept. will once again offer Saturday fun classes for DC 37 members and their families. During the fall term Guitar, Photography, Voice and Yoga will be offered at a cost of approximately $40. Classes are for children aged 8 to adults. Registration will take place on Saturday, September 14, 2002 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at union headquarters. For more information please call the Education Dept. at (212) 815-1700. The Author Talk Committee is sponsoring an evening with the authors of "From the folks who brought you the weekend: A short illustrated history of labor in the United States" on Wednesday, September 25 in Room 1 at DC 37 headquarters from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Priscilla Murolo and A.B. Chitty will be speaking on their book praised as "…a path breaking study of class, race and gender in American Life."
