Safety Spotlight:
West Nile Virus

It is again time to beware of the West Nile Virus, which is transmitted by the bite of an infected mosquito. WNV is not transmitted person-to-person or directly from animals or birds. Mosquitoes breed in any body of water that stands for more than four days.

Symptoms
In most cases, there are no symptoms or there is a mild flu-like illness including fever, fatigue, headache and muscle or joint pain. Severe cases are rare in humans, with individuals 50 or older at increased risk. Severe illness causes brain inflammation, which may result in death. Signs of severe infections include high fever, stiff neck, muscle weakness, tremors, disorientation and paralysis.

Who is at risk?
Anyone who works outdoors when mosquitoes are biting, especially at dusk or dawn or near standing water — stagnant pools, rain filled tarps, barrels or ruts. Certain mosquitoes are active during the day in wooded, shady or bushy areas. At particular risk are members such as Laborers, Highway Repairers, Lifeguards, truck drivers, sewage, parks and pest control employees. If you think you are infected, see your doctor as soon as possible.

Prevention
There is no vaccine against WNV. Wear long sleeves and long pants of light material. Try to change the uniform policy at your workplace if necessary. Use the insect repellent provided by the employer. Instructions should be provided, and a data sheet and labels should be readily available. If you are pregnant, do not use repellent containing DEET. Rarely, DEET causes skin reactions. If so, notify your supervisor and seek medical attention.
