Employee Press Union Scrapbook Judge
Hinds-Radix wins a promotion
Justice
Sylvia Hinds-Radix will take on leadership responsibilities in some of the states
busiest courts in her new post as administrative judge for Brooklyn.
She
is the first woman and the first person of Caribbean heritage to hold the position.
In
a 16-year career as an attorney at District Council 37, Hinds-Radix worked in
the consumer litigation, bankruptcy and housing units of the unions Municipal
Employees Legal Services. She helped create the unions Affordable Mortgage
Program, a forerunner of todays Municipal Employees Housing Program, and
served as chief counsel of the former DC 37 Citizenship Program, which helped
many members become U.S. citizens.
Justice Hinds-Radix was elected to Civil
Court in Brooklyn in 2001 and to a 14-year term in state Supreme Court in 2004;
she was promoted to the administrative post for civil and criminal courts on May
6.
As administrative judge, she will lead day-to-day operations of the
trial courts in Brooklyn, ensuring that they function properly despite the states
extreme fiscal challenges. Administrative judges assume their additional responsibilities
while continuing to preside over court cases.
Her integrity and commitment
to justice are unsurpassed, said Brooklyn Civil Court Judge Sylvia Ash,
who attended Howard University Law School and worked at DC 37 with Hinds-Radix.
