District Council 37 candidates win MCU board seats

Union activists Beryl Major and Tessa I. Hackett-Vieira were elected May 7 to the board of directors of the Municipal Credit Union. Major and Hackett- Vieira join Local 1549 member Loretta Jones on the MCU board.

The new directors were elected to three-year terms on the MCU board. The credit union, which was established in 1916 to help city workers access loans, has 340,000 members and $1.79 billion in assets.

"It's important that city workers have another voice in the credit union to represent their interests," said Major, who serves as director of membership development for Municipal Hospital Employees Local 420 for 10 years.

Hackett-Vieira is a Social Worker in the union's Municipal Employees Legal Services Plan, a former member of Local 371 and longtime MCU member.

"We're going to work hard on behalf of the members and make sure that they receive the best-quality service; that's why I wanted to become a member of the board," she said.

Major expressed appreciation for the support she received from DC 37, Local 420 President Carmen Charles and Local 1549 President Eddie Rodriguez. "Their support together with a lot other people from DC 37 was key," said Major.
