It was Christmastime in July for 50 homeless children
and their parents as members of the DC 37 Womens Committee made
a magical midsummer holiday at union headquarters July 23.
We wanted a summer event that would have an impact on childrens
lives, said Magda DeJesus, the committee chair and president
of Real Estate Employees Local 1219. Many charities are supportive
around the traditional holidays, she added, but come summer,
these kids become the forgotten children.
The Womens Committee began planning the event last December.
They invited children from Auburn Family Center, a city-run shelter
that provides temporary housing for Queens families, to union headquarters
for the afternoon event. After feasting on McDonalds and Subway sandwiches,
the children enjoyed games, songs and face painting and received gifts
of clothing, shoes and toys donated by many of DC 37s 56 locals,
members, leaders and staff.
These children dont have much, yet they were selfless
and very grateful, said Ms. DeJesus. Presented with a toy, one
young girl asked if she could give it back and take home a dress for
her new baby sister, because her mother had no money for clothes.
She left with both, of course, said Ms. DeJesus. The committee hopes
to make the celebration an annual event.
