Civil War draft riots

The DC 37 Education Fund Authors’ Talk Committee will present a book talk with author Kevin Baker on his latest book “Paradise Alley.” The talk will be on Monday, Oct. 27 at 6 p.m., in Room 1 at DC 37.

The novel is a fictional account of the worst riot in U.S. history, which occured in New York City in 1863 after President Lincoln called for a draft allowing rich men to pay $300 to send a substitute to war at a time when working men did not earn that much wages in a year. The novel is based on the true experiences of Irish immigrants and African Americans who lived during the time. For further information, please call 212-815-1643.
