The Communists had PRAVDA,
the Republicans have FOX

Michael Moore’s “Fahrenheit 911” is only the most prominent of a new wave of progressive documentaries challenging the right-wing agenda. Robert Greenwald’s “Outfoxed,” for example, has led the Amazon.com best-seller list for weeks and recently premiered in theatres nationwide.

This movie launches a drive to “out” Fox News — making sure everyone knows Rupert Murdoch’s network is practically the media arm of the Republicans. Fox News interviews five Republicans for every Democrat and five conservatives for every liberal.

Control of the media — meaning control of the public’s right to know by ever-larger corporations — has emerged as a significant threat to American democracy. How can voters get the truth when a major network presents not “fair and balanced” news but partisan spin in the service of the Republican agenda.

In “Outfoxed,” interviews with former employees reveal the network’s secret internal workings: Every Fox news show gets orders from above, listing the day’s stories, telling how the company wants them slanted and “suggesting” highly partisan talking points. Producers, reporters and writers talk about how they were forced to articulate a right wing point of view or risk their jobs.

The network lauds Bush and demeans Kerry, stresses issues that divide Americans, such as abortion and gay rights, as it minimizes unemployment and the rising death toll in Iraq.

Mr. Greenwald also produced “Unprecedented” (about the 2000 election theft) and “Uncovered” (about the supposed weapons of mass destruction in Iraq). For the AFL-CIO, he did “Bush-watch,” a short film about George W. Bush’s horrendous anti-labor record.

All of his films and many more books and films about this year’s political issues are available in the Education Fund Library, Room 211 at DC 37, or call 212-815-1699.

“Outfoxed: Rupert Murdoch’s War on Journalism,” 77 minutes long, can be purchased in DVD or VHS for $9.95 (plus $3.50 for shipping) from www.outfoxed.org.
