Sylvia Ash for Brooklyn judge

DC 37 has endorsed Sylvia Ash for Civil Court Judge in Brooklyn (Kings County) in the primary on Tuesday, Sept. 13.

“It is important for members to get out and vote for our union sister Sylvia Ash,” said Lillian Roberts, DC 37 executive director . “If we can help her win September 13, she can go all the way in November.”

Ash is a Supervising Attorney in MELS, DC 37’s legal service, where she has worked for 20 years. By far the most experienced candidate in the countywide race for Civil Court Judge, Ash was chief counsel of DC 37’s successful Immigration Program, which has helped more than 10,000 members become U.S. citizens.

“We need qualified, independent, honest judges, dedicated to administering the law fairly and with dignity,” said Ash. “That is the kind of judge I intend to be. My career at DC 37 and my interaction with members have prepared me with unique experiences and skills that the average lawyer just doesn’t have.”

A long record of community service distinguishes Ash from the other candidates. As an advocate for the people, Sylvia Ash stands up for civil rights and the rights of workers, immigrants and women. She has worked as a family law attorney, a real estate lawyer, a matrimonial arbitrator and a Victim Services liaison, assisting battered women and abused children.

Ash’s grassroots campaign is winning over Brooklyn voters and gaining support from county Democrats. In addition to the 121,000-member DC 37 and other unions, Ash has broad support from local Democrats, including U.S. Congress members Ed Towns and Anthony Weiner; state Sens. Carl Kruger, John Sampson, Carl Andrews, Kevin Parker and Diane Savino; Assembly members Vito Lopez, Dov Hikind and Nick Perry; City Council members Charles Barron, Yvette D. Clarke, Kendall Stewart and Diane Reyna; and many district leaders.
