Local 299 scholarships
honor hero priest of 9/11 Three
daughters of Local 299 members will get the locals new scholarships, which
honor the Rev. Mychal Judge, the Fire Dept. Chaplain and Local 299 member who
died in the 9/11 terrorist attack. City Council Civil Service and Labor
Chair Joseph Addabbo Jr. presented the $2,000 awards June 14 at a membership meeting.
The winners of the Rev. Mychal Judge Memorial Scholarships are Katherine Lee,
Alyse Martin, and Karell Belle. Lee is the daughter of the Rev. Ernest
Lee, a Chaplain with the Health and Hospitals Corp. in Staten Island. In September,
she will start at Bryn Mawr College. Martin, who will study at Nassau
Community College, is the daughter of Donna Martin, a Recreation Specialist who
works for the Dept. of Parks and Recreation in Queens. Belle is the daughter
of Ethel Bobb, an HHC Activity Therapist in Brooklyn. She has been accepted at
Binghamton University. Local 299 established the award to provide scholarships
to the children of members every year. Winners are eligible for only one award.
The three awardees are talented, enthusiastic students, Local
299 President Louis Sbar said. The local is happy to help them pursue their
educational dreams, especially when college costs are so high. | |
