Tips for avoiding workplace problems
In these difficult economic times, when there are at least five workers for every job that's available, we all need to hold on to the jobs we have. The
DC 37 Clerical Division offers the following handy tips:
- Use agency computers only for work-related tasks.
- Use your own personal computer at home for your personal business. If you don't have one, use the free computers at many public library branches.
- Always be respectful of your clients, co-workers and managers at all levels. Avoid altercations and blowups with co-workers, management and clients. These can and do lead to suspensions and loss of jobs.
- If you are asked to do something - do it. You can grieve it later. Contact your union rep if you want help filing a grievance.
- Time and Leave Policies: Avoid excessive lateness and minimize the your absences. These can result in
financial penalities and even cost you your job.
- DC 37's Personal Service Unit is there to help if you are experiencing problems at home or on the job. The PSU's accredited social workers are on the 3rd floor of the union at 125 Barclay St. Reach out and ask for help - it's available (call 212-815-1111).
- MELS: Tough economic conditions lead to legal and social difficulties. If you are experiencing problems paying Con Edison, your rent is behind, you are thinking about filing for bankruptcy or your marriage is falling apart, reach out to the skilled staff of DC 37's Municipal Employees Legal Services on the 10th floor program at 125 Barclay St. They can offer assistance with civil but not criminal cases (call 212-815-1111).
- You can access employee/agency policies - including Time and Leave and Codes of Conduct - on the Internet via your computer at work.
Your union contracts are also available on the Internet at www.dc37.net. Use your home computer to access the Citywide Contract and the Clerical Contract and read them. Know your rights!
