Pakistan flood survivors need our help

The catastrophic flood waters sweeping through the small towns of Pakistan are of such magnitude that humanitarian assistance on a global scale is required.

After a month of the worst flooding in the nation’s history, one-fifth of the nation was under water and 4 million people were homeless. An ever-increasing tide of refugees crowded together without food, shelter, clean water or medicines.

“Unprecedented rains have led to a tragic loss of life,” said DC 37 Executive Director Lillian Roberts. “The floods have washed away the homes and livelihoods of millions, survivors risk disease from drinking contaminated waters, and crops, infrastructure and communication in much of the country have been severely damaged.”

“Emergency assistance is urgently needed. At the request of the Asian Heritage Committee, I ask that DC 37 locals, members and employees contribute to provide relief to these suffering people who are facing an overwhelming national disaster.”

The prime minister of Pakistan has established a special relief fund. Checks can be made payable to “Prime Minister’s Flood Relief Fund 2010” and sent to Executive Office, District Council 37, 125 Barclay St., Room 525, New York, NY 10007. The checks will be collected and forwarded to the Consulate General of Pakistan.
