Three union-backed Dems win Congressional primaries
- Three of the five candidates DC 37 supported in the June 26 Democratic Congressional primaries won their races with the help of the union's Green Machine volunteers.
- One of the most contentious battles was in the 15th Congressional District where Charles Rangel won the nomination for his 22nd term representing the district, which includes East Harlem and the northwest Bronx.
- Ten-term Congressmember Nydia M. Velazquez won overwhelmingly in the 7th Congressional District, which includes parts of Brooklyn, Queens and the Lower East Side of Manhattan.
- With 88 percent of the vote, Yvette Clarke won her primary in the 11th Congressional District, which covers Brownsville, Crown Heights, Prospect Park and Flatbush. A friend of DC 37 and the labor movement, Clarke has supported the Healthy Families Act to extend paid sick leave and the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act.
On Aug. 8, the DC 37 Executive Board endorsed Grace Meng and Mark Murphy for Congress in the November general election. Meng will face off against Republican Daniel J. Halloran to represent the 40th Congressional District in Queens. Murphy will face Republican Mike Grimm in Staten Island's 13th C.D.
