Domenic M. Recchia Jr.: DC 37 has endorsed former City Council member and Finance Committee Chair Domenic M. Recchia Jr. in the Nov. 4 election to represent the 11th Congressional District (Staten Island and southern Brooklyn). Recchia, a longtime ally of the union, played a central role in preventing the layoffs of 650 School Aides in 2012.

“Congress needs someone with a history of working across party lines,” said DC 37 Executive Director Lillian Roberts. The vote for this seat in the U.S. Congress has great national importance. Victory for Democrat Recchia over incumbent Republican Michael Grimm would answer Republican attempts to kill the Affordable Care Act and block President Obama’s efforts to increase wages and protect the environment.

“I’m honored to have the support of DC 37 and the extraordinary men and women who work every day to keep our city moving,” said Recchia, who succeeded in providing City Council funds to protect members and services from damaging cuts sought by the previous administration.

“Voting for Recchia would strike a blow for Obama and win better representation for our members in the 11th District,” said Associate Director Henry Garrido.

“Most Corrupt Members of Congress” by the non-partisan group Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington.

“We cannot take anything for granted in this election,” said Local 1320 President James Tucciarelli, a Staten Island resident. “We have got to get all of our members out to the polls.”

Thomas P. DiNapoli: DC 37 has enthusiastically endorsed Thomas P. DiNapoli for state Comptroller against Republican Rob Antonacci. DiNapoli stood strong with public service workers against harmful changes in the pension system.

Accountability and transparency of government finances has been his mission. When DC 37 and other public sector unions asked him to study the budgets and outside contracts of state agencies, Comptroller Di Napoli uncovered massive waste and misuse of taxpayers’ money and instituted stringent reporting requirements on their financial dealings.

His audits blew the whistle on more than $1 billion of unjustified contracting out at the Port Authority and other agencies. In 2012 he launched a series of audits that found widespread abuse of public funds by special education contractors, resulting in felony arrests, guilty pleas and restitution. He forced one contractor to repay more than $400,000 that was crookedly charged to the New York City Dept. of Education.

While other states around the country have struggled with their pension funds, DiNapoli has done extremely well at protecting the retirement security of 1 million employees and retirees in his role of managing the $176 billion New York State and Local Retirement System. He instituted important reforms, including increasing opportunities for women and minority investment firms and banning profiteer “placement agents.”

“Comptroller DiNapoli understands and cares about the impact of financial decisions on working and poor people. We should vote to keep his sensitivity and expertise in office,” said DC 37 Executive Director Lillian Roberts.
