Honored:
Retirees’ Audrey Iszard and Local 299’s Rabbi Alvin Kass

Brooklyn’s 42nd Assembly District Democratic Club honored two DC 37 activists as “outstanding community leaders” Aug. 24, Rabbi Alvin Kass of Local 299 and Retirees Association Executive Vice President Audrey Iszard.

The two also received proclamations on their “exceptional service” from state Sen. John Sampson.

A former U.S. Air Force chaplain, Rabbi Kass is the Senior Chaplain of the Police Dept. A graduate of the Jewish Theological Seminary, he also holds a master’s degree from Columbia University and a doctorate from New York University. Kass has taught at JTS, the Herzl Institute, the John Jay College of Criminal Justice and several universities.

When Iszard retired from the Finance Dept. in 1992, she became an activist in the Retirees Association. She is an Honorary Grand Matron of the Star of Bethlehem Grand Chapter of the Eastern Star in Brooklyn and has been involved since 1965 with St. Peter’s Church in the Bronx. In 1995, she brought needed supplies to South Africa as a delegate from the church.

“I work with people of all nationalities. My greatest joy in life is helping others. It is a lifetime job,” she said.
