Star News presents award to Lillian Roberts
DC 37 Executive Director Lillian Roberts was
one of 11 outstanding New Yorkers in labor, business and communications who were
honored by Black Star News at its annual awards dinner at Harlems historic
National Black Theater on Nov. 30.
I am honored to receive this award
and proud to work for the members ofDistrict Council 37, making sure their rights
are protected, Roberts said. I have been in this fight for a very
long time, but my work is not over. There is still a lot more to be done.
We
are gratified that some of the most successful pioneers in their respective fields
have joined us as we celebrate our 10th anniversary, said Milton Allimadi,
chief operating officer of Black Star News Publishing Co., a pan-African news
group founded in 1997 and financed by entertainer Bill Cosby and his wife, Camille.
Lillian
Roberts has been at the forefront of union organizing for decades and Gil Noble
defines the essence of bold and fearless journalism, Allimadi said. Both
are leaders who many people look up to and we are proud to recognize their achievements.
This
year Black Star News honored industry leaders who are on the forefront for workers
rights and empowering our people through information in the theaters
Nubian Heritage atrium. Other award recipients included NY1 anchor Dominic Carter,
Daily News columnist Errol Lewis, Columbia University administrator La-Verna Fountain,
and several local Black entrepreneurs. The New York Times, Columbia University
and District Council 37 joined Black Star News in sponsoring the event. | |
