Demmings named to AFL-CIO group

District Council 37 General Counsel Eddie Demmings has been appointed to the board of directors of the AFL-CIO Lawyers Coordinating Committee by John J. Sweeney, president of the union federation.

The AFL-CIO Lawyers Coordinating Committee is the nation’s largest coalition of labor lawyers. It advocates for union members on a wide variety of issues including the rights to vote, to organize and to bargain collectively.

“I am very pleased with the appointment,” Demmings said. “I have already volunteered the DC 37 Legal Department to contribute legal advice and expertise on behalf of union members nationwide.” The DC 37 Legal Dept. defends the rights of working members and retirees and represents the union and its 56 locals as they pursue justice on the job.

The legal team has won several landmark cases that enforce the hard-won rights of union members and hold the city to its contractual obligations to its unionized workforce. DC 37 Executive Director Lillian Roberts appointed Demmings to head the department in 2004.
