Labor and Faith shares books Activists from the union's Labor, Faith and Community Outreach program gave away more than 4,000 free books at a Harlem book fair organized by unions and community groups. The book fair took place on Friday, April 24, and Saturday, April 25, at PS 175 on W. 138th Street in Harlem. Kevin McLaurin, a member of Local 1549, is active in the program and participated in the Harlem book fair. "It's important that the union be visible in the community fighting alongside the people," McLaurin said. "We're trying to build this coalition. It's the same type of coalition that existed some 50 years ago during the civil rights and labor movements when we marched together in solidarity." The Labor, Faith and Community Outreach program is an initiative of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, DC 37's parent union, and was launched in 2014. Its next meeting will be at DC 37 union headquarters on Saturday, June 27. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
