NAACP honors Garrido

By GREGORY N. HEIRES

The New York Branch NAACP honored DC 37 Executive Director Henry Garrido at its 104th anniversary celebration.

Along with Garrido, the civil rights organization paid tribute to 1199 SEIU President George Gresham and Janella Hinds, secretary-treasurer of the New York City Central Labor Council.

"Building on the Legacy" was the theme of this year's Freedom Fund Gala, which was held on June 12, at the New York Hilton Hotel in Manhattan.

Anthony Harmon, president of New York Branch NAACP, presented Garrido with a plaque in recognition of his contributions to the struggle for civil and economic rights and social justice. New York Public Library Guild Local 1930 President Valentin Colon and Hospital Employees Local 420 President Carmen Charles also took part in the presentation, praising Garrido for moving DC 37 forward.

In his remarks, Garrido said the social justice movement needs to unite to address the growing economic divide in the United States. He described inequality as "the most insidious quality of our society" today.
