Shop Stewards helping members

In an ongoing effort to improve services for members, Local 1070 met with shop stewards at union headquarters March 31.

Local 1070 represents city and state workers in District Attorney offices, the Dept. of Probation, and the Unified Court System, who keep the wheels of justice in motion.

"You are our eyes and ears, our voice in the courthouses, and we are grateful for the work you do," Local 1070 President Fausto Sabatino told the stewards attending. The meeting was coordinated by Michelle Lumpkin the local's vice president.

Members' concerns

After introducing the new White Collar Division Director Tyler Hemingway, Sabatino expounded on issues of concern for members at the Staten Island District Attorney's Office, such as job security, disparities in job qualifications, broad-banded titles and updating job specifications to include duties added to keep pace with technology.

He said, "Knowing these changes helps us justify our requests for pay upgrades."

Steve Schwartz, a special advisor to Local 1070, explained how longevity pay is a significant benefit DC 37 negotiated.

"Many court employees in other unions no longer have longevity - they negotiated it away - but Local 1070 and DC 37 fought hard at the bargaining table to retain this benefit. It was one of the issues that prolonged our contract negotiations," Schwartz said.

At the end of April, Local 1070 members with 20-25 years of service will get a longevity sum of $1,900, 25 to 30 years $2,000, and 30 or more years, $2,100, he said, "and that money comes in handy in this economy."

Lumpkin said the local will look to mentor shop stewards to handle more union responsibilities in coming months. The local is still looking for shop stewards in several locations where there are none.

"We have confidence in you and ask that you bring to our attention policies from management so we know whether they are contractual. You are the union!" Lumpkin said.
