Members turn out for workshop

DC 37's Education Fund in conjunction with the New York chapter of the National Association of Social Workers hosted two educational workshops for licensed Social Workers who are members of Local 768.

The first workshop was held March 31 at union headquarters and covered the recent changes to the Diagnostic Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. Clinicians and researchers use the American Psychiatric Association's DSM to diagnose and classify mental disorders.

The April 2 workshop covered new approaches to Dialectical Behavior Therapy, which is used to treat individuals with self-harm behaviors, such suicide and cutting themselves.

Members who completed the workshops received continuing education credits.

"The turnout for these workshops was great," said Stephen Johnson, an assistant director for the Ed Fund. The free workshop attracted 226 members, Johnson said. The Education Fund will host more workshops in the fall.
