Wins in Congressional races

DC 37's Green Machine was busy June 28 at the union's phone banks, calling voters and reminding them to get to the polls for Democratic Congressional primary election that day.

The union's army of volunteers centered its efforts on the races of Congressional representatives Nydia Velazquez, (7th C.D); Carolyn Maloney, (12th C.D.); Jerrold Nadler,
(10th C.D.) and Jose E. Serrano (15th C.D.)

All of these incumbents easily won their bids to return to Washington, D.C.

The union offered congratulations to state Sen. Adriano Espailliat, who pulled ahead of a crowded field of candidates in the race to fill the seat of retiring Harlem Congress member Charles Rangel in the 13th Congressional District.

As this newspaper went to press, Espaillat had declared victory in the primary with a 1,000-plus vote lead over his closest rival, Assembly member Keith Wright. Espaillat is poised to become the first Dominican-born member of the U.S. Congress.

The union is also supporting Democrat Richard Reichard. In November, he will face off against Republican Congress Re0. Dan Donovan in Staten Island. Reichard is a former president of the Staten Island Democratic Association.
